A best-selling book of a few years back was entitled College Begins at Two. The author presented the idea that the educational foundation a young child receives in his early years could well determine his educational future — even to the college level. He was right! Today, in the wake of alarming trends in public schools, parents are becoming increasingly concerned about their children’s education. Many years ago we decided to address this situation and began the Wilmington Christian Academy preschool. Since then, hundreds of children have completed our excellent academic program. The reason? Parents realize that Wilmington Christian Academy offers a distinct educational alternative by providing a strong foundation for their children’s education in a setting that is conducive to spiritual growth. You, too, can get your child off to a good start! If you would like further information, please call the office weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 791-4248 ext. 122. We appreciate your interest in Christian education! YOU HOLD THE KEY! Sincerely, Mrs. Cathy Dotson, Ed.D.
3-Year-Old Program K-3 children can learn. Research concerning early learning shows that we have greatly underestimated what young children can and should be learning. Small children are curious; they are born with a desire to learn. We accept the challenge to teach them. Number and letter awareness are learned through hands-on experiences in their environment.
4-Year-Old Kindergarten Program Phonics - As the year progresses, the children learn 44 basic sounds of the English language and apply their phonics skills to reading. Guided activities teach these young learners initial letter sounds and alphabet recognition. Phonemic awareness happens through practice, drill, and reinforcement. Children learn to read using a phonics based program. Printing - These little ones will learn correct pencil holding position and paper placement. They will also learn to print upper case and lower case letters a-z and numerals 0-20. Activities teach many pre-writing skills, left to right, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved line tracking.
Bible - Four-year-olds discover how to think, grow, know, and live "God’s way." Through Bible lessons, character stories, Bible verses, and memory work, the children learn Bible truths and how to apply those truths to their young lives. Electives - Art, music, Spanish, and library are offered on a weekly basis. Extras - Traditional literature, realistic and fanciful prose, and poetry help develop good listening skills as well as vocabulary development and enrichment. Craft activities, songs, musical games, and stories are used to teach many of the heritage studies and science themes. Children learn concepts of God’s plan for the child and his family. Holidays, community helpers and patriotism are used to develop many exciting activities. Young learners study seasonal earth, plant and animal changes. They enjoy activities which relate to seasons, family and the farm.
5-Year-Old Kindergarten Program Five-year-old kindergarten is one of the most important years in a child’s education. During this time a child acquires the basic academic building Phonics, Reading, and Writing - While developing necessary foundational skills, the children are also learning the sounds of the alphabet as they sing the phonics songs and use the phonics charts. The students progress through the alphabet learning the primary sound of each letter and practicing a writing style that has proven effective with young writers. Children are placed in reading groups by ability level to maximize their abilities. Each student completes activities to improve phonics, handwriting, composition, grammar and spelling skills. Mathematics - Through the use of hands-on materials, the students learn the basic foundation of mathematics. Using the A Beka Math program, the students learn number recognition, number value, counting, sorting and classifying, spatial-relationships, time, money, fractions, the calendar, the months of the year, pictographs, addition and subtraction facts. Bible - Bible truths and scripture memorization are taught daily. Once each week, the children meet for a chapel service. Computer Skills - Beginning in kindergarten and continuing through the elementary years, children are taught computer application skills through a curriculum-integrated program. Age-appropriate material introduces them to concepts, such as spread sheets, word processing, data base, graphics, web page design and much more. Our 25-station, internet active computer lab gives our students the tools needed to be computer literate. Classroom computers provide daily opportunities for technological fun. Electives - Art, music, P.E., Spanish, library, and computer education are offered on a weekly basis. Extras - These young students learn God’s plan for the child in the home, classroom and community. American heritage and patriotism are emphasized. Seasonal earth, plant and animal changes are some of the units of study. These young learners get involved with many seasonal family activities. English skills are correlated with lessons for art, music and motor development. Musical skills and concepts, including songs, musical games and craft activities are also correlated with heritage studies and science themes.
