Reading

Please remember that a "C" reader is an average reader, a "B" reader is above average, and an "A" reader is an advanced reader. A "C" grade at the beginning of the school year is normal.

Accelerated Reader Reading

The weekly tests are due every Monday. Of course, students may take AR tests other days of the week as well as Mondays if they are prepared to do so. However, having the weekly tests due on Monday gives students the opportunity to finish reading books over the weekend and to then take their tests during our weekly library time. The last day to take and AR test and the due date for returning all library books for the school year is May 25th. The last required weekly AR test will be due Monday, May 21st.

End of Year Party

Our end of year party will take place Thursday, May 31st at the Monkey Joe's located at Long Leaf Mall. The cost is $7.00 per student. Students should wear their field day t-shirts and casual pants. We will have lunch in the cafeteria before leaving for the party. We will arrive at Monkey Joe's by 12:00 p.m. The party will last until 2:00 p.m., at which time we will return to the school (Students may leave Monkey Joe's with their parents.).

Field Day

Our field day is coming up on Thursday, May 17th.  The theme for this year's field day is "It's a Jungle Out There." This day is super fun!  Parents are welcome to join us for the day.  Our class mascot will be the "Rockin' Rhinos."  We will be receiving field day t-shirts (lime green) to wear for the day. These shirts will go home the day before field day.  Students should wear bathing suits under their field day t-shirts (Guys may wear their swim trunks and field day t-shirts.  Girls should wear their field day t-shirts and long shorts or capris over their bathing suits.) Students staying for after care should bring a full change of clothers.  Students will be FILTHY but HAPPY by the end of the day! You will probably want to have towels for the students to sit on in the car to go home. Please do NOT bring the daily folders or bags for this day. Please remember that any student who did not order a Chick-fil-A lunch will need to bring a packed lunch. We will need several rolling coolers filled with ice as well as several cases of water to keep the students hydrated throughout the day.  If you can help with any of these things please let me know.  It would also be great to have a couple of wagons for the kids to put their towels, etc. in.  Again, let me know if you can help with a wagon.  Thank you!

Looking Ahead

You may be wondering how to ensure your child's success in second grade.  Here are some tips:

  • Keep your child reading throughout the summer.  Most students lose some of the progress they made the previous year if they do not read over the summer.
  • Regularly review addition and subtraction facts,  counting money, etc.
  • Especially if your child has struggled with phonics, review the phonics charts regularly.
  • While review throughout the summer is important, don't work your child too hard.  The students need a good break so that they are fresh and excited about starting a new grade.
  • If you are able to, sign your child up for "Camp Learn-a-Lot," July 16-20th.  This is an enrichment camp designed for upcoming 2nd and 3rd grade students.  It will both prepare the students for and get the students excited about 2nd grade!  For more information about this camp, see the Enrichment Camp Brochure link on the left hand side of the website.

Reminders:

  • If you wish to make any Scholastic orders before the end of the year, please place them this week online at www.scholastic.com. To order online, please use the code HYZ8J. I have mailed the last order that I will make by "snail mail."
  • When doing math fact homework worksheets, please set a timer for your child for one minute and thiry seconds. Students should be able to complete the entire sheet in the one minute and thirty second time limit.
  • Don't forget to take advantage of the Used Uniform Sale from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. in Section C of the Cafeteria on Tuesday, May 15th! This is a great opportunity to get uniforms for next year at a good price!
  • Elementary Field Day and the Art Show is May 17th.
