Reading and Language We have begun our novel Medallion. It has valuable lessons for this age group throughout the entire book. We will have two quizzes on it. Everyone will take the AR test for it when we finish it. It will be their final test grade for the book. It does not count for their May AR book.
This week is Unit 16 spelling. The words are adorn, appropriate, assemble, colossal, effective, frail, hostage, landslide, rampage, scamper, symptom, and warrant. We will end the year with spelling tests. We'll work on the vocabulary in class and complete the exercises in the book. The vocabulary is all familiar words we've had all year in our reading, etc. The unfamiliar words were in the first three quarters. There are excellent activities on the Sadlier-Oxford website. The web address is vocabularyworkshop.com. We are Level Orange. The students access code is VWL11S9FBQT4. You can also find the code highlighted on page 2 of the spelling book. This site is very beneficial for vocabulary activities.
AR Guidelines and Announcements May 90% Club Congratulations to the newest members of the May 90% Club! Miss Young's Readers: Trey, Hayden, Mikey Mr. Chappell's Readers: Cyan, Paige, Matthew, Nick S., Jacob May is "Choose From 3 Month". Students may read historical fiction, fantasy, or a mystery. Accelerated Reader (AR) is a monthly requirement for all students. The goal is to increase comprehension and develop a love for reading. Students must read a chapter book at their level and pass the AR test with 80% or higher. It is a test grade in reading. If a student reads multiple books in a month, the highest grade received will be recorded. If a student reads only one book, then the score they receive on that book will be recorded. Failure to read a book will result in a zero. Picture books are not acceptable for the monthly reading requirement. These may be read for fun and points with MIss Pope in the library. A steady diet of picture books is not beneficial in building your child's vocabulary and comprehension.
